Yesterday afternoon nap was excellent, got the full twenty minutes, and didn’t do too badly in the exam (not an A-grade paper, but I think that that can be accounted for by things other than the sleep deprivation).
Last night was harder – not just tired, but the kind of emotionally-fragile state that one gets after a couple of days without sleep.
2330 nap was extremely refreshing, however, and I’m feeling reasonably good at the moment.
The 2330 nap was interesting in that I remember dreaming, albeit briefly, which would confirm that I have indeed started to reach REM sleep in less than 20 minutes of downtime. Empirical validation FTW.

Seems like you’re getting to a state of sleep-deprivation (seeing as you’re actually halving the amount of sleep you’re getting from 18 hours to about 9 hrs 20)
The sleep deprivation is at a high enough level to give you a good nap when you need it, but not to keep you from the tiredness.
*That’s 18 hours, 9 hrs 20 per week.
Yep, without a doubt I’m sleep-deprived. :) But not nearly as much as I expected to be, and I’m progressing a lot faster than I expected I would. Everyone who tries this is sleep-deprived three days in.
The theory goes that as the body gets used to the fact that it will never sleep for longer than 20 minutes, REM sleep (the kind most associated with rejuvenation, which normally only occurs later on in the sleep cycle) will begin to occur much sooner in the sleep period and will last for longer. If people get through the adaption period (generally a week or two), they generally don’t experience any sleep deprivation at all and function at full capacity.
That said, I’m due for my 1730 nap. :D
